Rohtang Pass vs Atal Tunnel: What Every Mountain Traveler Must Know
For decades, Rohtang Pass (13,058 ft) was the only high-altitude gateway connecting Manali to the mystic Lahaul and Spiti Valleys. Since the grand opening of the Atal Tunnel (9.02 km), travelers can now cross into the snowfields of Sissu in just 15 minutes!
1. Seasonal Breakdown: When to Visit
- Snow Season (December to March): Atal Tunnel remains open, offering direct access to the snow-covered alpine wonderland of Sissu and North Portal. Rohtang Pass is closed due to heavy snow.
- Summer & Rohtang Pass Reopening (May to October): Rohtang Pass opens for permitted vehicles. Enjoy snow activities, yak rides, and paragliding at the top.
- Autumn Colors (September to November): Crisp blue skies, golden poplar trees in Lahaul Valley, and clear mountain visibility.
2. NGT Permit Guidelines for Rohtang Pass
Under National Green Tribunal (NGT) environmental guidelines, daily permits are restricted to 800 petrol and 400 diesel vehicles.
- Permits open 6 days in advance on the official Himachal Tourism portal.
- Tour Crafters takes care of your complete Rohtang Pass permits and certified 4x4 cab bookings, so you don't have to worry about permit queues!
